Eyelash Hypotrichosis

In addition to providing aesthetic value (long, full eyelashes are linked with beauty). Eyelashes are incredibly functional, protecting our eyes by acting as a natural shield from the sun, sweat, and other environmental factors. Their reflexes also prompt the eye to close if an object gets too close to this sensitive area. Thinning eyelashes are an undesirable side effect of aging, but if you’re noticing significantly fewer lashes than normal, you may have a condition called eyelash hypotrichosis.

Eyelash hypotrichosis refers to inadequate or not enough eyelashes. It can be congenital (from birth) or can occur as a result of the following:

  • Aging
  • Improper use of eyelash curlers
  • Hormone conditions
  • Chronic inflammation of the eyelash follicles (blepharitis) due to illness
  • Poor makeup removal technique
  • Improperly applied eyelash extensions
  • Allergies to the glue used to apply extensions
  • Reactions to certain cosmetics.

Treatment Options

Latisse

Latisse (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%).

Latisse is an FDA and Health Canada approved medical treatment to treat hypotrichosis of the upper eyelashes. The active ingredient in latisse is called Bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analogue, which helps to stimulate the follicles, so hair grows faster. This medication is used to treat patients with not enough or inadequate eyelashes. Bimatoprost makes the eyelashes more noticeable by causing more eyelashes to grow and making them longer, thicker, and darker. Bimatoprost is similar to a natural chemical in the body (prostaglandin).

Latisse requires a prescription, at Bello Wellness, Abigail will conduct a medical assessment to determine if you are a good candidate.  Because latisse has some potential side effects, individuals need to be made aware of them, and they should have a healthcare practitioner monitoring who can manage side effects.
